The latest film from acclaimed Catalan director Gay (Krámpack, In The City) is a beautifully muted, intimate exploration of an unexpected relationship.
Alex (Fernández) is a successful, married filmmaker who’s stalled on his new script and faces a creative crisis. Seeking inspiration and distance from family distractions, he goes to stay with old pal Santi (Javier Cámara) in the stunning Catalan Pyrenees. At dinner with mutual friend Judith (Pla), Alex is introduced to her guest Mónica (Germán), a violinist. Over dinner, the four reflect on their lives, the decisions they’ve made and who they have become.
Adorned with sumptuous, bittersweet moments, FICTION is the director’s first love story and Gay’s ability to establish mood is exquisitely refined here. Excellent performances abound, expressed through pauses and gestures as well as dialogue - each line loaded with meaning. In FICTION the emotional power lies equally in words unspoken and caresses denied. A wonderful love story for grown-ups.
