Miguel Faria’s insightful documentary traces the life and art of legendary Brazilian poet, playwright & songwriter Vinicius de Moraes, the internationally famous lyricist of the bossa nova classic ‘The Girl From Ipanema’ and writer of the original play which inspired the film Black Orheus. The film depicts Vinicius as musician, poet, diplomat and lover of nine wives!
Working alongside with Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto, Moraes created the Bossa Nova; later he paired with Toquinho, Tom Jobim and others, and all in all wrote the music and lyrics to over 400 sassy, ground-breaking songs that have become standards in Brazilian music, all the while carrying on a diplomatic career until he was expelled by the dictatorship in 1969.
His life is examined through interviews with friends, lovers and relatives; rare archival footage; and sensational performances of his songs and poems. This revealing look at a world-class artist goes beyond perceived myths to get at the heart of its passionate, compelling subject – and easily transcends its genre.
